Kindergarten at Dr. SSNPS: Nursery, LKG and UKG

The first years of school should feel like discovery, not pressure. At Dr. SSNPS kindergarten, children learn to listen, speak, count, create and share through play, stories and hands-on materials, in classrooms designed for young children. Our kindergarten is part of a CBSE-affiliated school in SS Layout, Davanagere, so your child can continue from Nursery all the way to Grade 10 on the same campus.

Learning through play

Young children learn best when they are curious and moving. Each kindergarten day is planned around activities that build language, early numbers, fine-motor control and the confidence to speak up in a group. Worksheets are a small part of the day; talking, building, sorting, drawing and listening to stories are the larger part.

A kindergarten day

The kindergarten day runs from 9:00 am to 12:50 pm. Through the morning, children move between whole-class circles, small-group activities and free play.

  • Good-morning circle: children share their news and experiences with their teacher, which builds speaking confidence from the first week.
  • Theme time: language, numbers and the world around us, taught through activities and objects children can handle.
  • Montessori lab: hands-on Montessori materials develop motor and fine-motor skills, concentration and independence.
  • Reading corner: children sit with a favourite story or picture book.
  • Bye-bye circle: before going home, the class recalls together what they did and learned that day.

What makes our kindergarten different

A dedicated Montessori lab

Kindergarten children are taken to a Montessori lab equipped for early years. Pouring, threading, sorting and matching activities strengthen the small muscles children later need for writing, and teach them to finish a task on their own.

Corners and circles that build confidence

  • Mystery corner: something new appears, and children explore it and talk about what they found.
  • Pandora box: a child picks an object and speaks about it, building vocabulary and the courage to speak in front of others.
  • Nature walks: walks on campus bring children close to plants, insects and weather, and spark early scientific curiosity.

Space to play

The kindergarten has its own play area with a ball pool, a toy library, a kids' gym and a trampoline, so that movement is a planned part of the day rather than an afterthought.

What children learn

By the end of UKG, children are ready for Grade 1 because they have practised:

  • Language: listening, speaking in sentences, recognising letters and sounds, early reading and writing in English, with an introduction to Kannada and Hindi
  • Numbers: counting, comparing, simple patterns and shapes
  • Motor skills: holding a pencil, cutting, colouring and building
  • Social skills: taking turns, sharing, following routines and caring for others
  • The world around us: seasons, plants, animals, festivals and the people who help us

Keeping little ones safe and well

  • CCTV surveillance across the campus, 24 hours a day
  • Controlled-access doors, smoke detectors and a fire-safety system
  • An infirmary with a qualified nurse throughout the school day
  • A lift and accessible toilets

Parents stay involved

Parents receive regular updates on what children did in class, along with home activities and announcements. Parent–teacher meetings are held through the year, and you can meet the teacher on other days by appointment.

From UKG to Grade 1 without changing school

Because Dr. SSNPS continues to Grade 10, children who finish UKG move into Grade 1 with familiar teachers, friends and routines, and with the same CBSE approach to learning.
